The term used in the Tanakh for grave is kevura (קְבוּרָה) which comes from the root word kavar (קָבַר) which means “to bury.”
- The Church of the Holy Sepulchre: This church is believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. The Hebrew name for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is כנסיית הקבר (Knesiyat HaKever), which literally means “the Church of the Tomb.”
- Rachel’s Tomb, traditionally believed to be the burial place of the matriarch Rachel, stands at the northern entrance to Bethlehem, near the Rachel’s Tomb checkpoint. Also known as the Bilal Bin Rabah Mosque, the site is revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.
- The different Hebrew names for the site, the biblical “Qǝbūrat Rāḥēl” and the modern “kever Rachel,” reflect the evolution of the language over millennia.
