eigenlijk – vlastně

1. “Actually”

This is the most common translation when “eigenlijk” is used to introduce a surprising or unexpected fact.
Example: “Ik dacht dat hij boos was, maar eigenlijk is hij gewoon verdrietig.” (I thought he was angry, but actually he’s just sad.)

2. “Really”

“Eigenlijk” can also be used to emphasize a statement or question.
Example: “Is het eigenlijk waar dat hij gaat verhuizen?” (Is it really true that he’s moving?)

3. “In fact”

This translation is often used when “eigenlijk” is used to introduce a clarification or additional detail.
Example: “Ik dacht dat ze alleen Engels sprak, maar eigenlijk kan ze ook Frans.” (I thought she only spoke English, but in fact she can also speak French.)

4. “Essentially”

When “eigenlijk” is used to summarize a point or idea, “essentially” can be a good translation.
Example: “Eigenlijk wil ik gewoon gelukkig zijn.” (Essentially, I just want to be happy.)
