Jewish ethnic divisions

The Jewish people encompass a multitude of ethnic groups, each with its unique customs, traditions, and languages. Here’s a brief overview of four Jewish ethnic divisions:

  • Ashkenazi Jews – The Ashkenazi Jews are the descendants of Jews who migrated from the Rhineland in western Germany into northern France and Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. Ashkenazi Jews have their own distinctive customs, traditions, and liturgy.
  • Sephardi Jews – Sephardi Jews are the descendants of Jews who lived in Spain and Portugal before their expulsion in 1492 and 1497, respectively. Sephardi Jews settled in various parts of the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, and the Middle East. They have their own distinctive customs, traditions, and liturgy.
  • Timani Jews – Timani Jews, also known as Yemenite Jews, are Jews who have lived in Yemen for over 2,000 years. They are one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world. Timani Jews have their own distinctive customs, traditions, and liturgy.
  • Tzarfati Jews – Tzarfati Jews are Jews of North African descent, particularly Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. The name “Tzarfati” is a Hebrew word meaning “French” and was used to describe Jews from Western Europe. Tzarfati Jews have their own distinctive customs, traditions, and liturgy.

I am not Morrocan, American, or Russian
I am a Jew, I am a Jew, Jew, I am a Jew

When they ask me what I am
I am not religious or secular,

Not an optimist or a pessimist, naive,
I am a Jew, I am a Jew, Jew, I am a Jew

All of Israel are connected to each other
All of Israel are brothers
We live here together, we live with hope
And more important than anything is love

We are citizens, we are soldiers, we are people, yes we are human beings
We stride and move ahead, we believe, we hope and we do not lose hope
We are Jews, Jews, we are Jews
