Niederdeutsch ist die Sprache, die man früher allgemein im Norden von Deutschland gesprochen hat. „Nieder“ bedeutet, dass das Land dort flach ist, kaum Berge hat. – Dolní němčina je jazyk, kterým se v minulosti běžně mluvilo na severu Německa. „Dolno-“ znamená, že tamní krajina je placatá, téměř bez hor.
