Skit of Saints Anthony and Theodosius Kyiv-Pechersk in Odrynki, Odrynki, Poland
The only Orthodox skit in Poland, established in 2009. It is part of the Warsaw-Biels diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
Skit in Odrynki se nachází v pustině. Obklopují ji pouze rozlehlé louky a lužní lesy řeky Narew. Během jarního tání a podzimních dešťů je Skit obklopen vodní hladinou a vypadá jako ostrov na řece Narew. V létě Narew pouze meandruje mezi travinami rostoucími kolem Skitu. Přes mokřady vede 800 metrů dlouhá dřevěná lávka, která spojuje Skit s vesnicí Odrynki. Po několik let to byl jediný přístup k poustevně.
Otec Gabriel byl představeným kláštera Suprasl, když byl v roce 2008 vysvěcen na biskupa v Gorlici. Citově spjatý s podlaskou zemí odmítl, nechtěl jít na druhý konec Polska. Byl degradován a přestal zastávat svůj post v supraslském klášteře.
Žil v v pustině u řeky Narew. Bez elektřiny, bez tekoucí vody, odříznutý od civilizace. Po několika letech si díky podpoře místních vesničanů a lidí z jiných částí Podlasí postavil dřevěný pravoslavný kostel, dům pro mnichy a hospodářské místnosti. Otec Gabriel bydlel po celou dobu v baráku. Choval včely, léčil bylinkami a hledal kandidáty na poustevnický život. Nikdo však nevydržel žít odříznutý od výdobytků moderní civilizace.
The Skit in Odrynky is the only Orthodox hermitage in Poland. The place where it was founded was no accident. It is reported that the first hermitages in the Odrynka area were already in the 16th century.
It is surrounded only by vast meadows and floodplain forests of the Narew River. During the spring thaw and autumn rains, the Skit is surrounded by water and looks like an island on the Narew River. In summer, the Narew merely meanders between the grasses growing around the Skit. An 800-metre-long wooden footbridge crosses the wetlands and connects Skit with the village of Odrynki. For several years this was the only access to the hermitage.
Father Gabriel was the superior of the Suprasl monastery when he was consecrated bishop of Gorlice in 2008. Emotionally connected to the Podlasie country, he refused, not wanting to go to the other side of Poland. He was demoted and ceased to hold his post in the Suprasl monastery.
He lived in the wilderness by the Narew River. No electricity, no running water, cut off from civilization. After a few years, thanks to the support of local villagers and people from other parts of Podlasie, he built a wooden Orthodox church, a house for the monks and outbuildings. Father Gabriel lived in the barrack all the time. He kept bees, treated with herbs and looked for candidates for the hermit life. But no one could stand to live cut off from the advances of modern civilization.
