In essence, Berat Kandili is a time for spiritual renewal and seeking a fresh start. “Berat” in Arabic means “acquittal” or “discharge.”
It’s known by various names in different regions, including Shab-e-Barat, Laylat al-Bara’ah and Nisfu Sha’ban.
Berat Kandili, also known as the Night of Forgiveness or the Night of Records, holds deep spiritual significance in Islamic tradition. Observed on the 15th night of the month of Sha’ban in the Islamic calendar, it is a time for self-reflection, seeking forgiveness, and preparing for Ramadan. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date shifts each year on the Gregorian calendar.
- In 2025, Shab-e-Barat was observed from the evening of Thursday, February 13, until the evening of Friday, February 14, 2025.
Muslims often spend the night in prayer, reading the Quran, and asking for Allah’s mercy and guidance. Acts of charity and kindness are also encouraged, as it is seen as an opportunity for spiritual renewal and cleansing of the soul. Many believe that on this sacred night, their deeds are recorded and their fates for the coming year are determined.”
